Sounds like the kind of stale joke John McCain would try to make.

That said, what is your source?

That was a (reasonably funny) joke about a non candidate.  It's like calling Nancy Reagan a "Stepford Wife."  (That was Joan Rivers, BTW.)

And I'm glad to hear that J.J. approves disgusting attacks on politicians' children when the politician is of the opposite party.

As I said elsewhere, it is totally inappropriate. That being said, while I'm not excusing it, McCain told a stupid, offensive joke. This Palin pregnancy story isn't a joke.

I wouldn't call it an attack of Chelsea.  I think it is a joke and directed at Janet Reno; I've seen those on SNL.

If he claimed Chelsea used drugs or sold guns, that would be an attack; this isn't.

I agree with J.J.  This was more of a Janet Reno joke than Chelsea Clinton joke.

I agree that it's more of a Reno joke but he did call the girl ugly. It was low.

The most offensive part of this joke was how incredibly unfunny it was.

I thought the "Janet Reno is her father," is good, but I wouldn't have used Chelsea as the set up.  I wouldn't call her stunning, but not ugly either.

Phil is 100% correct.  Anyone insults my daughter -- especially when she's at that awkward age that Chelsea was at -- and I'll crack his fu**ing skull. And Chelsea has grown into a very attractive, graceful young lady.

But this is the whole point.  Chelsea Clinton and Bristol Palin are CHILDREN.  There is never any excuse for trying to score political points or just "tell a funny" at their expense.  No excuse.  I was even seriously uncomfortable with the attacks on the Bush twins, though they were adults at the time.

Attack Bill Clinton for lying under oath.  Attack him because you think he's too liberal.  Whatever.

Attack Sarah Palin for lacking experience or for using her power to get someone canned.  Or because she's too conservative.

LEAVE THEIR EFFIN' CHILDREN ALONE

Who cares. McCain was wrong but two wrongs doesn't make a right. You guys are lowering yourselves to his level, which is sick.

It's a great joke.  He managed to insult four people in only twelve words.  That's one person a word!

12/4 = 1 Huh

I've actually never seen that quote before. Is it true? If so I find it embarrassing. However, she was 18, was she out campaigning at that point?

If she were 18 and out campaigning, that essentially makes her the equivalent of Bristol Palin. Anyway, no, I don't think in the summer of '98 she would have been on the campaign trail, since neither of her parents were running for anything and I don't think she joined her mother on her Wounded Wife tour on behalf of people like Chuck Schumer.

Bristol Palin has been campaigning? Got a link?

Guys, this has been all over the place since at least May (and it was a mini-scandal in 1998, too). Come on, now.

She was with her mom in Dayton and in Washington, Pa. the day after. That's what campaigning means for a teenager in a political family. If you were implying that Chelsea would have been out giving speeches in 1998, no, neither her nor Bristol Palin were anywhere near doing that, and neither were the Bush twins, who were also 18 in their first Presidential election. In which case we surely agree McCain was out-of-bounds in attacking her looks.
