This is insane. Once upon a time, VPs came from important states. Then, they came from mid-sized states. Now they're being airlifted in from the far corners of nowhere. Someone thinks this is a good idea, so will we see more of it?

Which tiny little state will provide the next VP or Presidential candidate, and who will it be?

Well, I think we've already theorized here that a VP pick doesn't really put VP homestates in play, so...

This should serve as further evidence that even the pros think the "we should pick so and so because they can swing state X" argument is usually pretty stupid.  It's more effective to just pick someone who you think will help nationally.

That's easy to explain. Most big states nowadays are political monoliths. No amount of ticket selection would ever change them. As for the swing states, a VP pick strong enough to actually swing them would be better left "in house" to coordinate GOTV drives.

I've never seen you so unhinged before.  What are your restrictions for which states are allowed to be important?

Elections are won in the popular vote.  This state or that only matters when the national vote margin is within 2%.

If you think a Montana governor is going to give you a NATIONAL boost of more than 2%, you pick the Montana governor.

Biden was essential to give Obama foreign policy cred.

Palin was essential to give McCain youth, estrogen and Jesus cred.

Cheney is an evil genius who is plotting WWIII from his secret lair deep within a south pacific island.
