Uh, Russia broke the cease-fire. They're pressing farther into Georgia.

Al Jazeera says that the Russians have sunk six Georgian Navy ships, and have a blockade on the port of Poti.

Ossetians are apparently rampaging through Uncle Joe's hometown and are probably paying respects to the museum.

I'd be happy to let Putin stick his face in the bear trap.

..and logically, everyone should just capitulate.  I mean, since it's inevitable and all.

Well what would you have us do? Attack Russia over this? Get into either a massive conventional land war or a nuclear exchange? Is the solution to every problem nowadays just bombing the heck out of it?

Colin,

What is it with you?

You seem to believe the only alternatives are to surrender or risk nuclear war!!!

The solution is to arm those opposing Russian agression with effective weapons, which will likely deter Russian agression, or make them pay dearly if they fail to be dettered.

This is beyond the pale, though.  There is a genuine global crisis going on here.

Bush just saying Saddam had WMDs is a lot different than actual VIDEO of Russian tanks breaking a ceasefire and taking over a country.

But it's Mother Russia against an American ally, did you really think Xahar would come down on our side?  I guess there could be a first time for everything, but I wouldn't suggesting holding ones breath waiting for it to happen.  Don't try and use logic against him either, unless you like pissing in the wind.

South Ossettia is Georgian territory, and Russia had no right to invade. If Canada issued passports to all residents of Maine, I think we'd have a big problem too. This phony excuse they used about "protecting Ossettians" is a total lie.

Hey, it worked in Northern Ireland...whoops.. Wink

To be fair, Georgia is a tiny country on Russia's borders that has spent 90% of its recent history as part of Russia. To claim that Russia dominating it, or even exercising heavy influence over its internal affairs is some sort of "global crisis" is absurd. It is no more a crisis than when Russia occupied it in the 19th century, or in 1922, or when Russia first supported South Ossetia in 1993.

Should the US endeavor to help Georgia? Yes. Is the US capable of helping Georgia in the long run  if it insists on being anti-Russian? No. Georgia's independence is the result of temporary Russian weakness which is now ending. The US cannot sustain Georgia any more than the Soviet Union could sustain Grenada once the US decided to use force. Any statement to the contrary(ie. McCain) is simply designed for domestic US consumption. It is noticeable that no one has suggested a single thing the US could actually do.

By your theory then Britain would be justified in re-occupying India.

But Britain would be unable to, because India would be able to easily stop them, and even if they couldn't, we could stop that move. This is not a moral argument - Russia rarely has a moral case for most of what it does - it is a practical one. These tiny countries are incapable of defending themselves from Russia, and we are incapable of protecting them. As such, it makes absolutely no sense for us to incite them against Russia, and in fact does them a disservice.

As to whether or not Russia in Georgia is a threat to us, let's take a look at your analogy. The only reason Britain reoccupying India would be a threat is that India is an important country economically and strategically but the very things that make it important also make it strong enough to resist Britain. The fact that Russia beat Georgia so easily, is sign of how little it actually mattered. As long as Russia does not touch the pipeline, there is no country in the world which would be willing to risk hostilities with Russia because Russian tanks are running amok in northern Georgia.

To suggest that I have any affility to Putinist Russia is ludicrous. I have absolutely no respect for Yeltsin or any of his successors after the events of 1993.

You want them back to the way they were before 1993?  Well no wonder you're on their side here (that and your hatred of all things American) they certainly are acting like they did pre '93.

Do you know what I am referring to?

BTW, the fall of the Soviet Union was in 1991.
