Early Saturday, I heard up to 2,000 people were killed in the ongoing Georgia/Russia war...that's more than half the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq in 5 years. Yet...not one thing on the news about it. MSNBC is playing a prison show, FOX is re-airing a Geraldo, and CNN had something about guns or some boring stuff.

Where is the coverage of this deadly conflict which has already taken thousands of lives?

You guys expected this to get more coverage? You overestimate the intelligence and caring of the media and the average American.
Anyways just go to BBC.com and even Wikipedia for ongoing stuff.

Indeed. They probably aren't airing it to avoid confusing Americans with a country that has the same name as a state. Tongue

LOL!! You might be on to something. I would guess that a lot of people would have a cow if they thought Moscow and Atlanta were having a border skirmish. Grin

breaking news: man has affair with woman, possibly troll
(this is really important guys)

Anyway, you can blame this on the fact that the American media is trash and has been obsessed with the Edwards "scandal" for the past couple of days.

Is this surprising to people? The news plays whatever they think their audience will be interested in and apparently American's couldn't give a damn what is happening in Georgia right now. The media doesn't have a liberal or conservative bias, they play whatever will make them money. Some of the republicans who scream liberal media now should go back and look at the war coverage by the same "liberal" media in 2003.

Considering how biased the American coverage is, perhaps it's better that there's less of it.

That's one reason I went free lance.  Even in the day to day reporting of news on a small, midwestern radio network -- my bosses were listening to asshole consultants.  The consultants were saying...

1.  As little international news as possible.  No one cares about the brown people.
2.  As little local news about crime, poverty, the inner city or anything unhappy as possible.  (Or, as my boss put it, "No one cares if Willie shoots Rufus, or if Chico robs a liquor store".  Nice, huh?)
3.   Lots and lots of "news you can use".  In short, tell people how to save for college, how to make their grocery bill stretch, how to enjoy a great vacation on the cheap and what the most kid-friendly holiday toys are.
4.   Do lots of feelgood and heartwarming pieces -- about kittens in trees, people overcoming cancer or letters sent 50 years ago finally arriving at their destination.
5.   Heavy focus on entertainment.

The last couple years, I spent so much time fighting with my bosses over why this or that story was "news" -- I just said, "the hell with it".  I am old school, hard core -- if it bleeds, it leads.  (Not exactly, but you get my drift.)

What do you expect from a guy who made his bones on a manual typewriter, with carbon paper and reel to reel tape?

Very true. North Americans love those things.

Radio-Canada's 18:00 newscast is horrible. Especially here. First, a feature report on the local arts festival organized by the local arts and crafts club (include live on-the-site reporter). Then the heartbreaking story of the garbage cat who got run over by a car (include weeping people). Then a reporter that reports on the upcoming retirement home events. Then sports news on how the Gatineau [insert cool name here] defeated the Hawkesbury [insert cool name here] in [insert sport name here]. Then, mention in the last 4 seconds that there's a genocide somewhere. But close the newscast with happy people and/or fireworks.

Gatineau sucks.

It's better than Chinese State TV News.

The first 15 minutes are guaranteed to talk about what the Party bigwigs did today, and whatever propaganda they have.

The next 10 minutes are about other national stories.

The last 5 minutes are about world news.

If you study the epoch, it's wonderfully interesting.

I mean the fact that all of this makes the main news titles...

Did the French media hear your ultimatum?

The most important evening news in France, those of 08h00 pm on TF1, opened with Georgia and spent 8 minutes on this, very alarming tone.

Euh, if it is, it is not a lot, you know for us your medias, among other things, are a kind of "model", even if we have problems to admit it...Wink

France2 actually covered the situation first last night, and probably again tonight. They even sent a reporter to Tbilisi.

Radio-Canada has a reporter in Montreal covering the situation. YEAGH!
