Eh i liked uniforms back during my India days just because I wouldn't have to worry about what to wear. But I also had to wear ties and a button up shirt when it was 110 outside. That's some f**ked up s**t man. It also breeds conformity into the population which is not good at all considering how corrupt politicans/businessman and other people in powerful postions are. Somebody needs to be there to question authority......

I would have hated wearing one but I have always been in favor of them, sure it's great to question authority and stand out, but middle school is about schooling and not leading an insurrection, anyone who thinks uniforms for school children is fascist should be dragged out into the street and shot.

I'm pretty sure I wore jeans and a t-shirt to every day of 7th and 8th grade... hardly an insurrection was being led.  I really don't think uniforms will change the fact that occasionally two middle school girls get in a fight and one bashes the others head against the wall until her eye pops out of hte socket...

Personally I think kids should be in elementary school until 6th grade and then have very small classes in 7th and 8th grade so that the teachers can keep an eye on their hormonal pipsqueaks.

I could go for that too, but while we're at it we should re-do this whole school thing from top to bottom.

I don't like them but that doesn't mean I would have anything against schools having them.

We already have enough social control and conformity as is. MUCH more than enough in fact. I wouldn't allow public schools to do uniforms or strict dress codes and if a private schools wants to do either they have to pay massive fees per year.

My school has a dress code. Can't wear any items deemed 'inappropriate' by the staff and all shorts/skirts have to be at or below the knee-caps. You also can't have your shoulders exposed or really low-cut shirts.

So basically it all affects the girls, not the guys.
Certainly being denied the right to see girls walk by in skimpy summer clothing affects the guys rather notably?

Like I said, it's enforcement is pretty spotty. So, Cheesy for me.

My school had a dress code.  Wearing Abercrombie and Fitch was mandatory; failure to comply would result in social ostracizing.

Honestly, now that I'm out of high school, I have no problem with school uniforms.

I agree no one should be forced to wear something they don't want to wear.

That kind of advice will lead to a heck of a lot of teen pregnancies.

I honestly don't care all that much. I don't see them as too great a restriction on freedom of expression but I don't see them as being ultra-necessary either.

I'm in favour. School uniforms are only a problem if you're one of those shallow idiots trying to "express yourself" with your clothes.

As Tory says they level income differences (and it does, of course, matter. You can't show off with other things as good as with clothes) which is good imo and also gives more focus on school (something which, incidentally, ALSO benefits those from the lower classes, of course). The kind of latte liberals that frequent this forum would obviously find that it is more important for them to express themselves with a Che Guevara T-shirt though.

Mr. Moderate, President
Clothes do not give the right for someone to get pregnat. It is like saying if you wear a skirt you are asking to be raped. What a stupid thing to say.

In Australia, almost all public schools have school uniforms. My school had school uniforms, all the neighbouring schools had uniforms, in fact, I couldn't think of a school that didn't have uniforms.

The presence of uniforms didn't lead to rebellion in other areas, nor did they lead to exceptional academic results. Indeed, about the only real affect that it had was in the stimulation of debates such as this in social sciences classes.

Seriously, uniforms are just uniforms. It's just clothing. In my opinion, it's better for schools to have uniforms, because it makes the students appear more professional to the local community, it tends to be cheaper than keeping up with latest fashions and it's simpler to enforce than an arbitrary dress code.

I'm all for uniforms as long as they aren't trashy. Khaki's and polos suffice.

Yep. So I am against ugly ones. I want my school to look like a country club, not a public school.

I wore uniforms for twelve years. I had no problem with them. I think it's a great idea. That being said, I'm glad I get to wear whatever I want in college.
