As a general rule, when sleaze rags start getting very specific about details they probably aren't making the whole thing up.

Hmm...a paper that preys upon people at the bottom of the economic spectrum going after a candidate that pushes policies most beneficial to them...so surprised.  At least he's getting some attn. from the "liberal" media, unlike those politicians from each party that were rated most favorably by corporate America.

I'm shocked that you're actually defending him.  His wife is dying of cancer.  Meanwhile, Edwards has an illegitimate child and is having an affair.  How do most of you react, either ignoring it or defending him.  Just pathetic.

i'm glad you get your news from bottom-feeders.  CNN/FN/MSNBC aren't much better, though, but at least they're not preying upon the most vulnerable (the "news" networks cater to wealthy, "educated" people who are like totally open-minded, except when it comes to economics). btw, i'm not defending him, but i'll need corroborating evidence before i can appraise JRE's character.  all i know is that i wish Obama had his policies and commitment to substantive debate.

First, I don't read the national enquirer.  Second, a lot of the information was extremely specific, although I'll grant you that I should have waited for more information before I passed judgement.

He's defending the politics, not the man.

If this is true, Edwards is not only a complete asshat, but ing incredibly stupid and has no commitment to "policies beneficial... to people at the bottom of the economic spectrum". For a man who ran with so much criticism at the Clintons he sure hasn't learned a thing from Bill Clinton. Forget his wife and her cancer. Edwards was going to be the next President yet he chose to indulge the same failing as what brought down the most successful Democrat in the past 40 years?Huh WTF was he thinking? What kind of commitment to populist policies is that?

The MSM isn't covering this story, but it's received at least some play in the gray area between MSM and blogosphere, like Slate:

Cheating on your terminally ill wife?

That's even worse than cheating on your wife because she's crippled!

National Enquirer + Internet blogs + Edward's various political enemies, does not equal a believable story.

The Enquirer has tried running this story before, it's never gotten anywhere. Trash this like you would an ARG poll

why?  they were right on the limbaugh story....which BTW was then jumped on every media outlet out there.  of course in this case, its "just the enquirer"

As I just said in that post - they've tried to run this story before and it's been proven BS

Just like with Gary Hart.  Oh wait...

Of course! They got it correct once over 20 years ago, so they must be correct this time.

for the record, this was being discussed on CNN last night.  They didn't assume it to be true, but it was being fully discussed, and the implication was that Edwards ought to have no trouble quashing it if it's false.  I imagine most viewers went away from the discussion thinking the story is likely true, unless Edwards can successfully refute it.

What's the Weekly World News reporting about this story?

Sadly, the Weekly World News is no longer in print.
Besides, this story is far too realistic for them. Not even any aliens!

I personally think that politicians' sex lives should not be a factor in deciding who to support for public office.... regardless of that this story sadly enough seems to be developing additional legs beyond just Enquirer rumor.

Amusing.  Unfortunately for the DailyKos/HuffPost denizens, I have no doubt that this story is 100% true.

Where is jfern anyways?

Amusingly, HuffPuff were the first to report on Rielle Hunter, though they didn't allege an affair back then:

I'd seriously rather hear Edwards is gay vs. Edwards is having an affair with this hag.
