I would guess it is due mostly to the aftermath of the GOP primary and the lack of one on the Democratic side.  Also, the more conservative Republican won which is likely driving moderates and/or independents towards Udall for the time being.

Except that Wilson hardly polled any stronger than Pearce.

Think of it this way: Udall's old house seat, while secure, shouldn't have been the uber-bastion it was either. Seems the guy is just very popular.
Why, I don't know. Why is Mark Warner so popular?
