In 1962, President John F. Kennedy's younger brother, Robert Kennedy, was Attorney General, not Secretary of State and not Secretary of Defense.

Why, therefore, did he not mind his own business, and leave the handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis to the President, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and the military leadership?

Robert Kennedy was a hot head, and was really not a qualified resource person at the time of an international crisis.

Robert Kennedy was always poking his nose into affairs that did not concern his department, and often got in over his head in affairs in which he had no business or expertise.

Please discuss.

The president can have whomever he wants to consult him on any matter. JFK simply  felt comfortable with his brother consulting him.

It was like Bill Clinton having the bitch his wife heading up his health care plan. Was it the best move? Probably not but again, the president can have whoever he wants to consult him on any matter.

Because the president seeks his own council.  As it turned it, it was a good decision.

.

Bit hard when even his own department wasn't his own expertise.

RFK was a giant big phony.

If JFK hadn't wanted his brother's advice he wouldn't have asked him.  Let's face it, looking over the Kennedy presidency and reviewing the tapes RFK was his closest advisor and the one person JFK felt he could trust.
