He belongs to the party that has squashed real alternative energy research (ethanol corn subsidies don't count). Now he claims that the US will have oil independence by 2025. Let me guess, he doesn't plan on living to age 89 so that we can say what a failure he was?

How have Republicans squashed alternative energy? Even without lavish subsidies, the price of energy from non fossil-fuel sources has been decreasing dramatically, and is nearly competitive with the price of fuel from coal.

Fossil fuel prices have nowhere to go but up, there's a static supply and increasing demand. Increases in technology have been making alternatives cheaper, and various "alternative energy" sources, such as nuclear and wind, are very near the point of being truly competitive with fossil fuels and widely adopted for the simple fact that they're cheaper.
