No! McCain needs this guy and his vast experience to attack the inexperienced Obama!

WOW, this won't last long.  However, Jindal has solidified his future role as the darling of the far-right wing of the Republican Party.

The Supremes will bounce this 9-0 or 7-2.

I didn't know Diana Ross had veto power over laws passed by the state of Louisiana.

People didn't know this? I love Jindal, but he is a far-right politician. He's also against abortion in all cases, even if the mother is endangered.

Scalia and Thomas run together, unless stare decisis is involved, and then sometimes Scalia follows it even if he thinks the original decision wrong, and Thomas never does. But upholding castration does not involve overturning a decision banning it, I don't think, so the twins here should be twins.

Chemical Castration is already used in several states, I believe.

Serious question: Is chemical castration of convicted sex offenders actually unpopular?

Probably not, but it's the kind of thing that elected officials should be responsible enough to reject.

Lynching used to be pretty popular.

Because Thomas is too stupid to vote differently than his boy Scalia.

I'm merely responding to all the people in this thread who are suggesting that only the "far right" supports policies like these, or that this kills Jindal's chances of ever being on a national ticket.  Ummm.....I don't think that holds up if the policy in question has widespread support, or if there's no politically viable way for anyone to attack him on it.

Can you imagine the ad?  "Bobby Jindal supports chemical castration of convicted child rapists."  Yeah, that'll make one heck of an "attack" ad.

Jindal is an extremist not to try to see it the convicted child rapists' way.

I don't think it would explicitly harm him. At least not as much as the exorcism.

But these things can add up to lead to general impression of a bit of a wingnut, and that's harmful.

Torie, I hate to say it, but the law is modeled after the California law passed in 2007 (first offense optional, second offense mandatory).  Tongue

These other states also have chemical castration as a possible punishment option (as far as I could find):  Florida (the earliest back in 1997), Georgia, Texas, Iowa and Montana

I really doubt that this law is opposed by very many people (except for the child molesters themselves, maybe), and I doubt this hurts Jindal.  I am more likely to think that his inability to veto the LA legislature doubling their own pay hurts him quite a bit more.

However, it was highly amusing to see the impassioned defense of child molesters on this forum from other posters than opebo for a change.

I've never been more scared of somebody becoming president than I am of Bobby Jindal becoming president. Not George W Bush, not Dick Cheney, not John McCain, not Romney... all of those guys becoming president (or that already are) pale in comparision to my fear of Bobby Jindal becoming president.

Six states currently have this on their books:  California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, and Montana.  Doing a little research, the California law (which was the original law in the country) passed the democratic assembly by 85% (51 to 8 ) before being signed into law by Gov. Wilson.  Not very "right wing" action after all.

Looking into the drug they use (Depo-Provera), it is actually a temporary effect, requiring regular treatments.  Basically, it lowers the testosterone levels, making it next to impossible for a man to get excited.  Not sure what impact Viagra might have though (haven't come across anything about that yet).  The drug comes in either an injection format or as a pill, so no "dipping in acid."

As far as the Supreme Court goes, the ACLU has complained against the California practice, but I don't see any federal rulings on it, hence why there are a handful of states that now practice this.  The ACLU said it interfered with a mans right to reproduce, but since the effects are only temporary, they probably don't have a case.

Ok, does that answer everyone's knee-jerk uninformed responses on this topic so far?

Torie, I hate to say it, but the law is modeled after the California law passed in 2007 (first offense optional, second offense mandatory).  Tongue

It was passed in 1996 in California (see above).
