The country was a British possession on mandate from the League of Nations, so whether it even 'belonged' to the British is debatable. But even if it did, that doesn't affect the rights of the individual Palestinians who owned their homes and tracts of land not to have their property taken from them, unless you are arguing that the British government literally owned all the land in Palestine and the Palestinians were just leasing it from them.
