...and what if the company goes bust? What then? I understand that it might seem Right and Just to force coal owners to pay for this sort of thing, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Especially as the original point was not to punish negligent companies (there are better ways of doing that), but to provide a certain amount of dignity and support (seperate from compensation) to families that have suddenly lost their breadwinner.

Amendment 2: Nay

What can I say? My idea was that of a bad one and I know nothing about Mining Tongue.

Interestingly, one of the amendments which passed alters the effect of this bill quite significantly, enough that I would recommend voting against it -- see Al's posts on page 2.

We are voting on the final passage of the legislation.

Miners' Widows Bill

1. The civil partners of miners or former miners who die as a result of their occupation or former occupation shall each be given $10,000 a year from the company responsible for the site.

Nay

The bill is too vague, dying because of lung cancer from being down in the mines could be attributed to the occupation.  The litigation would be nightmarish and unnecessary.

So?

The real problem here is that the mining companies have to provide the financial support, and not the government.

Nay.

I don't think legislation like this should be industry specific. Moreover, it would seem wiser to me to require employers of high risk occupations to perhaps provide life insurance for deaths attributable to occupational hazards.

By the way, if a vote is called, the title of the thread should be changed to announce that, so Senators have notice.  Or is there a separate notice thread?

It would also be nice to have the text put up again, incorporating all amendments, so one does not have to scroll the thread to try to deduce what the net result is.

The real problem is that it is simply a bill to try and create lawsuits against the mining company, $10,000 is not an amount sufficient to live off of.  I would be willing to support a bill that create a pension plan for civil partners of people who die in the line of work, meaning physically die at the job site or a hospital after a disaster.

I'll shock some of you, I support this as long as it doesn't make the mining companies go out of business as a result. So I urge my Senator, Meeker, to vote for this as well as all of you voted in nationwide. Smiley

Clerical error. Though I have to say good luck trying to find a list of current Senators. It took me ten minutes to create a list which I hope is correct. The Wiki page hasn't been updated since the Twenty-Fourth Senate!

Yea, that was one of the harder parts of the job, and the Wiki didn't help. I would always forget about Afleitch and Hughento.

What I ended up doing eventually is having a little sticky note of everyone on the side of my monitor.

And I'm not quite sure whether DWTL is a Senator...

I know I have a little text file up now to tell me our current members. My belief is that DWTL is a Senator until Bacon King takes the oath.
