In France, we hear more and more that Ireland could say "NO" to the referendum on Europe on next Friday. If this happen it would be a huge confirmation of what I think on Europe but it would be also a huge surprise to me that Irish take the responsibility of stopping what all others try to build.

What do you expect the result to do? Do you think Ireland can say "NO"? Where do you think it could drive Europe if ever Ireland says "NO"?

Thank you, enjoy!

The Lisboa treat which try to give the first step of the beginning of a political Europe and which has been very hard to set up is dead if Ireland say "NO". For sure this is them to choose what they want for their situation.

If ever this is "NO"... Wow!

As a great Pro-European, I think I oppose this treaty. Smiley

Sorry the vote isn't on Friday, it is today until 10 pm and the result will be tomorrow at 12 am.

Ireland has Europe in its hands... (How fragile is Europe...!)

It's an all or nothing deal?  That's kind of silly isn't it?

The treat must be rated at unanimity by each country. The Irish constitution forced them to make a referendum, they're the only ones.

This treat is the second chance for Europe, the first had been thrown by my country, with a precedent referendum to a precedent treat for a political Europe.

This second chance had been very hard to set up, concessions very hard to obtain

More the chances pass, more the treats are small and with something constant it is that they are not clear at all, no big ideas at all.

Well, if that's "NO", Europe will officially continues as it did from Nice Treat, more or less good, but psychologically this could be very hard. To me, here could be the funeral of the idea of a political Europe, which is anyway something in what I've stopped to believe.

Hopefully it passes, just so that we don't hear the French Trots, assorted fascists, and Communists yelling, whining and saying it's a huge victory for them.

Well, let's wait tomorrow to say if that's good or not, just say what you expect...

just so that we don't hear the French Trots, assorted fascists, and Communists yelling, whining and saying it's a huge victory for them.

For sure these persons are able to transform an eventual Irish "NO" in the victory of what they qualify their "ideas"... (I'm sure that not only some French would do it...)

My gut tells me the 'yes' will pass. I don't know why. I can't explain it.

That said, I'm far from knowledgeable on Irish politics and I haven't followed the referendum much apart from useless TV reports and this forum.

Ireland always waits until the next day to do counts.

(Very) Early tallies are out there. Looks like a solid No victory, probably something like 43-57 or something like that.

If the major parties would have any sense and take the right side that wouldn't have to occur...

Europe asked something to Ireland...

Ireland answered...

And it said...

"NO"!

Final result:

"NO": 53.85% "YES": 46.15%

Well, as I said, here's a flap in the idea of a political Europe.

Bureaucratic technicians Vs. Public Opinions

3rd round and Public Opinions win each time (1st round: France, 2nd: Netherlands, 3rd: Ireland).

More than ever I no more believe in the possibility for Europe to constitute a strong political entity.

What's happening now?

To me, 3 ways:

-This treat go back in Ireland, to try a new vote or an other way to make it pass, what I would be very surprised about.

-This treat continues to be rated by other countries, so only by parliamentaries, and when 26 on 27 have signed they decide to give Ireland a particular place in the Union (mouhahaha... Union!). I read something like this in some articles.

-Euh, Europe no more knows what to do and continue to let itself work like before, waiting for something, it doesn't know what, maybe nothing else, abandoning step by step the idea of a strong (or at least stronger than this, what is really easy!) political Europe.

Oh maybe an other way, someone find some big and clear ideas which make born a real feeling to be European and the will to wanna build something. Euh, this, I clearly don't believe in, but we never know, surprise me!

Well...

Political Europe 1957-2008? RIP?

Europe is not in its best shape ever now, but it's far from dead because Ireland has rejected the Lisbon Treaty. Far from it.

Yeah, I think it's going to take more than one election in Ireland to send Europe into a second Dark Ages.

Or at least one would hope.

Of course Europe will overcome this. Ireland will become more isolated though, as it will be the only country not to ratify the treaty. The rest of Europe will probably not wait for Ireland and press ahead anyway

Political Europe(By this I mean the EU) is the enabling of the Tranzi agenda so I hope it dies and dies soon.

This would show that the EU bureaucrats have nothing but contempt and apathy for Irish voters.  This is what they really are.
