On the democratic side, Lyndon Johnson shocks the delegates at the convention when he announces that he is infact not a candidate for the democratic nomination. That he plans to retire when this term is out in January of 1965. Johnson endorses Vice President Humphrey for the nomination. Bobby Kennedy is urged to run, but he says that it is too soon after the assassaination and he is not going to run that year. Humphrey is opposed by both Goverenor Pat Brown of California and Goverenor George Wallace at the convention. Humphrey defeats both of them overwelmingly on the first ballot. Humphrey chooses Thomas Dodd of Connecticut as his running mate.

On the republican side, Goldwater, Rockefeller, and Lodge go at eachother for the nomination. It is realtively split throughout the primary season. Rockefeller wins narrowly on the first ballot at the RNC. He selects Mark Hatfield of Oregon as his running mate.

George Wallace decides to run as an independent and he selects Curtis LeMay as his running mate.

The tickets are:

Hubert Humphrey/Thomas Dodd
vs.
Nelson Rockefeller/Mark Hatfield
vs.
George Wallace/Curtis LeMay

Discuss. Use maps if you wish.

The Democrats had all the advantages in 1964, and with LBJ as very popular, the charismatic Humphrey is able to defeat Rockefeller, narrowly, 292-169-77.

Hubert H. Humphrey/Thomas J. Dodd (D): 274 EV
Nelson Rockefeller/Mark Hatfield (R): 198 EV
George Wallace/Curtis LeMay (I): 66 EV

Senator Hubert Humphrey, who wasn't Vice President at the time Mr. Porter, thanks to no 22nd Amendment, realises his life long dream and is elected 37th President of the United States defeating New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. The map for this 1964 Presidential scenario is self-explanatory.

One question Mr. Porter, this has been brought up on numerous ocassions, but why would Governor George Wallace select Curtis LeMay as his running mate in 1964? We know at the time of this scenario, General LeMay was still in the Military and didn't leave the Military until 1965 due to numerous clashes with the RL Johnson Administration.
