Picking up from my earlier what-if 1980 Reagan/Cheney vs Carter/Mondale thread
In 1980, Governor Ronald Reagan and Congressman Dick Cheney defeat President Jimmy Carter and Vice President Walter Mondale by an electoral vote count of 431 to 107.
To continue with the scenario
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney defeat former Vice President Walter Mondale and Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro by an electoral vote count of 525 to 13.
Now the matter at hand
In 1988, Vice President Dick Cheney, after serving the past 8 years as a very capable Vice President, and given much responsibility by President Reagan, wins the Republican Presidential nomination unopposed.
After his victory in 1980, Reagan selects his main competitor for the nomination, George H W Bush, for Secretary of State.
Bush, former Congressman from Texas, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., former Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing, former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, gained world wide praise for his outstanding performance as Secretary of State for 8 years, and for his ability to bring diverse factions together.
Presidential nominee Cheney selects Secretary of State George H W Bush of Texas as the Vice Presidential nominee.
The Democrats nominate Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts for President and he selects respected Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas for Vice President.
How does this 1988 election turn out?
Republican Vice President Dick Cheney (WY) Secretary of State George H W Bush (TX)
Democrat Governor Michael Dukakis (MA) Senator Lloyd Bentsen (TX)
Please discuss, using maps if you choose.
