McCain. Obama cannot win a nationwide election unless he makes major inroads amongst working class folks.

My gut doesn't care, as it's busy digesting lunch. It's telling me to take a nap.

It has to be Obama. Though, the republicans tends to be unbeatable at the presidential level. I mean, if the democrats can't win now, do you honestly think they will EVER win?

My gut says Obama.  But only because there are so many signs that point to a Democratic victory in November.  It will be an astonishing rebuke of history if McCain wins, but he is the only type of Republican who could pull it off.

...and like I said, which such a large rebuke of history, would there not be large repercussions, or do people simply think that this will be a fluke and everything will be the same afterwards?

Obama, just because I can't see McCain getting elected in this political environment.

The brain says that any Democrat should win in the present electoral environment.  The gut is unsure, much like after eating Chinese food for lunch.  Part of this has to with the fact that even under great circumstances, electing a black is tough.  In an even election, both gut and brain would say a McCain victory.  But who knows.

it's probably going to be too difficult for McCain to win unless he does everything right and catches a few breaks.  the primary battle, his skin color, etc weaken Obama, of course, which keeps it close.  if Gore had run and was nominated he would have won easily.

it isn't like it makes much of a difference who wins anyway.  it's like watching a football game.

McCain

Obama is struggling and will continue to struggle among a core Democratic constituency - working class whites. When I take a look around an area like Northeast Philadelphia and honestly believe McCain has an advantage then Obama is unlikely to win this thing. Even if he wins areas that Kerry, it likely won't be by similar margins (Kerry won areas up here with 55-60% of the vote). No strong showing here, no winning PA and probably no winning the Presidency without PA.

Obama. It feels like 2006, where you could discuss all the strategic advantages Republicans had, the gerrymandering, the money, and the fact that people "just wouldn't vote for Democrats," and weighed it against the heavy anger with Republicans and the status quo. It was unthinkable that the Democrats would do so well until a month or two before Election Day. Then it happened.

My gut tells me that Obama will win this by a nice margin, not huge, and that the idea that this race must be close, he has a natural ceiling of 278 EVs, or that the country will choose McCain as the safe choice is as salient as the idea that Democrats had no hope of recapturing the House before 2012 at the earliest because of the way people voted in the past. (Yes, that's a jab at agcatter. Sorry, couldn't resist.)
