Now that we've had our first Senate election using proportional representation and had a few days to reflect, do you like it or the old system (districts) better?

New system. Counting will not be a problem in the future now that we've had a run. In retrospect a "test run" mock election to establish precedents might have been a good idea, but that's behind us now.

While this system had a bit of a roadbump, when all was said and done, we had a highly competitive election for all five seats.  I think this election was a good thing.

Well, this system is better than the district system, but it's hardly perfect.

When I put forward the system, I promised it would deliver more competitive elections; more voter choice and influence; and a new challenge for Atlasia's political parties. I believe each of these criteria have been met and I will defend the system as an improvement on the old District system.

This election had 14 candidates and before voting began, nobody predicted who the winners were going to be. Voters had more choice than in almost any election in Atlasian history. The major parties were engaged in the changeover and all adopted various strategies for trying to maximise their returns.

In the last District election, only one of the 5 Districts was competitive. Only in one district was there truly an election. Only in one district did it particularly matter whether someone voted or not.

The district elections have a long history of similar uncompetitiveness. Without genuine electoral competition, I don't believe that Atlasia can thrive and prosper. Competition generates interest, and interest generates activity. In this regard, the District system simply wasn't fit for purpose.

I admitted in another thread that I feel I was wrong on this.

So I hope every election is as competitive.

I prefer this system to the old system we had in Atlasia. It makes elections fun and exciting Cheesy (Now I really hope that is not copyrighted by Hasbro). Thanks to this system, the Joh for Canberra Conor for Nyman campaign had a chance and look at me now, I'm a Senator.

I'm happy enough with the new one, no matter the results.  It takes some getting used to, though.

I hate PR with a seething passion, but then again, I had a pitifully bad showing.
