There is no 24-hour period to change votes on simple amendments, only on final passage.

We are now voting on final passage of this legislation. Please vote Aye, Nay or Abstain.

Return to September 10th Bill

Section 1: Telecommunications Immunity Clarification
1. The current Atlasian government acknowledges that after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, telecommunications companies cooperated with the United States government in providing illegal access to customers' private information, including conversations which were 'wiretapped.'
2. The current Atlasian government supports prosecuting all companies involved, as well as anyone found guilty of providing these orders within the government, to the fullest extent of the law.

Section 2: Torture and Simulated Drowning
1. The government recognizes that torture is, and has been regardless of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, illegal, as confirmed in F.L. 22-7.
2. Simulated drowning, or 'waterboarding,' is a form of torture and remains prohibited by law.
3. The current government encourages that any member of the government found to have ordered or performed acts of torture be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Section 3: Free Speech Zones
1. The use of "free speech zones" as restricted areas where protesting may be permitted is to be discontinued immediately.

Section 4: Guantanamo Bay
1. The prison camp located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba is to be closed within six months after this act becomes law.
2. a. All those presently detained without due charge or detained though any other process of the law shall be released to their country of origin.
b. All those detained with due charge or detained though any other process of the law shall be put on trial.
c. All those who have been formally found guilty of charges brought before the court shall be transferred to a maximum security prison in Atlasia as per instructions of the judge.
d. All those found not guilty shall be released to their country of origin.

For the record, if President, I would veto Section 1.  The federal government is going to punish people for doing what the federal government told them to do?

Exactly

For the record, as President, I will veto this if passed.

It seems interesting that the only conservative left is the one with veto power.

I would support overturning such a veto. Those companies knowingly violated Article VI, Clause 8 of our Constitution. Just because the government told them to doesn't make it OK.

For reasons stated by Mr. Moderate I have to vote:
NAY

Though that is only because of section 1.

Doesn't matter if the companies were doing what the government asked them to do. They had plenty of corporate lawyers, they knew it was illegal. The government wasn't forcing them to do anything.

Actually, some companies which were asked to wiretap refused (Qwest, anyone?).  All of the companies which complied were fully aware of the legal consequences.

Either way, voting must conclude after 7 days.  That deadline having passed long ago, the legislation is passed and presented to the President.

Mmm... just realized I have a problem with Section 3.2d, although I suppose the existing ban on extraditing people who have a risk of facing death or torture is enough to satisfy my qualms.

Anyway, it's up to Senator Meeker whether he wants to override the line-item veto, or vote on accepting the new bill.
