Wow.

"P2008 - GOP. Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) -- the 2000 Dem nominee for VP -- says he is willing to be a pro-McCain speaker at this summer's Republican National Convention. "If Senator McCain, who I support so strongly, asked me to do it, if he thinks it will help him, I will," said Lieberman to The Hill. Lieberman said it is likely he will be asked to speak at the convention, but does not expect to be asked give the keynote address."

Of course Lieberman will speak, and do so in prime time.

Why is he even caucusing with the Democrats in the Senate anyway? He's far from being a Democrat in my point of view.

More reason to kick him to the curb in 2010. Let him officially switch over then.

I'm a little surprised actually. This will probably encourage more speculation about him being picked for VP, which isn't going to happen. If it did, that would be very strange. I suspect he may change parties by 2010 though.

Yeah it was basically republicans who put him over the top in CT and it wont happen again in 2010. His support will collapse amongst democrats and independents if he gives some Zell Miller type BS speech.

The only reason Joe Lieberman will switch parties is if the Republicans somehow take control of the Senate. Joe is only interested in power and whichever party will give him the most of it is who he will go with.

Of course, however, the man is not getting re-elected in 2012.

It's amazing how much better the Republican Senator Weicker was than this waste of human DNA.

Why wait that long?

Of course not. However, he'll be 70, and will either retire, or join his wife as a lobbyist.

Who's surprised? In 5 years he'll probably leave the Republicans for being too left-wing for him.

I anticipated this....it's gonna be an amazing convention. Republicans roaring with CHEERS as signs with "JOE!" on them are waving....

...then everyone will stop cheering when they find out it's not Joe Republic.

Most irritating part of this story: Reid says this wouldn't affect Lieberman's committee chairmanship or memberships.  What a leader.

If the guy defects, the Republicans take back the Senate by dint of Cheney, so one doesn't want to risk it.

Not too much of a surprise that the Republicans would want him there---they like getting defectors to speak (q.v. Zell Miller in 2004).

This really does burn the last bridge between Lieberman and the Democratic Party, though.  Doesn't mean he can't still win in 2012 as an Independent (2012 is a long time from now, and if Iraq is no longer a major concern, I shouldn't see why he couldn't win).

He won in 2006 when the Iraq war was at the height of its unpopularity as an Independent. He could do it again in 2012. It's not like the people that voted for him would care that he spoke at the RNC. Those voters voted for Lamont.

You're right, Reid has to say that for now, but when there are 53 or so true Democratic senators come January, he'd better change his tune.

I disagree.

The ideological breakdown of the exit polls were interesting
'Liberal' (26% of the vote) - Lamont 69%
'Moderates' (53% of the vote) - Lieberman 55%

Lieberman won by winning 'moderates' and politically identified 'independents' - a lot of this came from a certain sympathy vote for Joe. But after endorsing McCain and speaking at the RNC... I don't think that will be enough.

Heh...he still rather be "majority" leader.

The implication was that even in the 111th Congress this would not be held against Lieberman.
