I wish I had the day off tomorrow so I could head up to San Francisco and protest.

It's going to where both my surviving grandparents live.

Don't protest the torch.  Protest China.  Leave the torch and the carrier alone.

You know the modern Olympic torch relay began with the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a glorification of the Third Reich.

If it passed here, I'd go and protest for sure.

I'd have gone to Paris if I had lived in France BTW.

In otherwords, protest the damn torch.

So did most other Olympic traditions (such as the five rings).

I oppose mixing politics and sports.  Protest China.  Not the Olympics in any way.

It really doesn't make a bit of difference to protest it. I have a deep sense that what is going on in China is wrong, this extends beyond Tibet. But, let's face it...would an all out boycott of the '36 Olympics have changed anything at all?

That's what I thought but when I looked it up it said the rings were designed in 1913 but only became popularised in 1936.

Well, actually, the torch is visiting Canberra; the only city in Australia it is visiting. The local citizenry are delighted.

The Sydney torch passed by my house; I remember the event quite well.

Violent protests are not the way to go. I can accept the idea of turning your back on the torch, but not blocking its passage.

Oh and just in response to the title of the thread; the torch is not coming to where I live because it's already been here Wink.

Yet there is a difference in protesting and breaking lines to attack the torch and/or the runner.  If your winkie is too small and you feel that you have to assault the runner, then you are no better than those people you are protesting against.

Not to mention comparing the PRC with the Nazi regime is going too far. The annexation of Austria occurred less than 2 years after the 1936 Games. The PRC on the other hand has not been involved in a war was the 1979 invasion of Vietnam. A comparison with the 1980 Moscow Games would be more appropriate, but less juvenile.

Bump.

Olympic torch will come in my town December 31th, 2009 and will quit January 1st, 2010.

The mayor is very happy.
