Sorry Wales. :/ Though they were designed by a Welshman I think.

Those look odd to say the least. Are they phasing out the old coins then? When do these come into circulation?

This summer. The old coins will remain in circulation.

Please direct any and all free samples to me.  For that matter, you're welcome to forward all your U.S. currency to me, too.  I promise not to spend it all on candy.

They look like they have been purposely designed to reduce support for keeping the pound instead of joining the euro.

They're so ugly, Britons will be clamoring to join the euro just to get rid of them.

Wow... Britain used to be near the top for the aesthetic quality of their currency... these are some of the ugliest mother-f***ing things I have ever seen.

Even if they do opt for the euro, each nation has to design the tail side for their euro coins.

I'd expect the UK will do as the other monarchies issuing have generally done and put their monarch on the national side. (Spain and Monaco only do so for the 1 and 2 euro coins.)

Wait, those are the actual coins? I though they were like close ups of parts of the coins. Wow, good job UK.

Yeah, that is exactly what they look like.

Looking at them it seems the point is that all the coins of value less than £1 when arranged together (as shown) make up an image of the Royal Coat of Arms which is what appears on the £1 coin. That's why they look as though they are close-ups of parts of the coin.

For the record here's what's on the coins at present:

1p - a portcullis representing parliament
2p - three feathers (a royal symbol of Wales)
5p - a thistle (Scotland)
10p - a lion
20p - a rose (England)
50p - Britannia
£1 - Various designs

There is also a £2 coin. Both 50p coins and £2 coins are used as templates for commemorative coins, so what's on them can change. The £1 coin goes though a rotation of different symbols representing the UK and the home nations, national flowers, landmark bridges etc.

They're ugly, but it was a neat idea.
