The Republican machine is able to rally around Cheney, but he has an incredibly hard convincing moderates to vote for him.  However, with Gore placed back on the spotlight his environmental theories take center stage.  When people learn the truth, he is humiliated worse than WJB at the Scopes Trial.  Close, close result:
