I have an idea for a timeline in which the party nominee chooses the nominee from the previous election to be his VP. Here is the basic idea:
1960: Nixon/Lodge vs. Kennedy/Stevenson
Kennedy wins the election, but Stevenson becomes president upon Kennedy's assassination
1964: Goldwater/Nixon vs. Stevenson/Johnson
Nixon reluctantly accepts the VP slot to Goldwater, though they oth ultimately lose to Stevenson. Johnson becomes president shortly after due to Stevenson's death.
1968: Nixon/Goldwater vs. Johnson/Humphrey vs. Wallace/LeMay
After Goldwater accepts the VP slot to Nixon, the ticket defeats Johnson in an anti-incumbent year.
1972: Nixon/Goldwater vs. McGovern/Johnson
At a highly contested Democratic convention, McGovern wins the nomination, and chooses Johnson to balance the ticket. Nixon wins in a landslide, but not as much as in real life. Goldwater later assumes the presidency after Nixon resigns in scandal.
1976: Goldwater/Dole vs. Humphrey/McGovern
After a challenge from Gerald Ford, Goldwater becomes the nominee, with Bob Dole as his running mate. Humphey makes it out of the primaries the winner, and chooses McGovern to balance the ticket. McGovern later assumes the presidency after Humphrey's death.
1980: Reagan/Goldwater vs. McGovern/Carter
Although Ford was initially the frontrunner, the economic failures during the McGovern administration allowed the conservative Reagan to win the nomination. Golwater accepts the VP nom simply to tie Nixon's record. Reagan wins in a close race, though Goldwater takes over again a few months later after Reagan is assassinated.
1984: Ford/Dole vs. Mondale/McGovern
Third time's the charm for Ford. Due to constitutional issues, Goldwater decides not to seek reelection. Ford defeats Mondale in a landslide after his proposal to raise taxes.
1988: Ford/Dole vs. Gore/Mondale
Seeing the futility of their last two tickets, the Democrats decide to choose a candidate that's electable. When Hart drops out, Gore is seen as the nominee. Gore defeats the aging Ford.
1992: Dole/Perot vs. Gore/Mondale
After Gore's unpopular invasion of Iraq and budget deficits, Dole narrowly wins the nomination and the election. He reluctantly selects primary opponent Ross Perot as his running mate.
1996: Dole/Perot vs. Clinton/Gore
The charismatic Clinton defeats Dole.
