What a messed up little country. You can read all the gory details in this Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anjouan (Scroll down to African Union Invasion), and also check out the article about the rest of Comoros. They've had at least 18 coups d'état since 1975. 18

(CNN) -- Sporadic gunfire and explosions were heard Tuesday on the Indian Ocean island of Anjouan after soldiers arrived to oust a renegade commander.

Troops from Comoros -- a nation comprised mainly of three islands off the African coast -- landed on one of the islands, Anjouan, about 5 a.m. Tuesday. They hoped to dislodge a renegade commander who had declared de-facto secession from the country.

The soldiers from Comoros -- assisted by African Union soldiers from Tanzania -- almost immediately took control of the island's airport and seaport, according to journalist Jerome Delay, who is on Anjouan.

President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi of Comoros said the troops would fight forces loyal to Col. Mohamed Bacar, who took control of island last May.

Leaflets dropped on the island Monday warned residents to stay home because an invasion was near.

Residents greeted arriving troops with cheers of "Bacar is a dog" and "We want freedom," Delay said.

Comoros, home to about 711,000 people, is about 250 miles off the southeast coast of Africa -- east of Mozambique and northwest of Madagascar.

The Comoros has been caught up in a series of coups and political upheavals since gaining independence from France in 1975, The AP reported.
