Okay gang -- this should be a fun one.  Choose your favorite living Republican and your favorite living Democrat (exclude those who have served as President already).  Make them the nominees of each party in the present (2008) and post a map of how the November election would turn out.

All other things are the same -- we're in Iraq, the economy is as it presently is, etc.

(I have to sit down awhile and think about my two favorites before I post a map --)

Go...

Do you know how hard it is to pick a favorite Republican?  Especially here in California?  Anyways, here's Phil Bredesen vs. Mike Pence, about whom I don't know much other than he has a small-government, conservative reputation and isn't as nutty as Ron Paul.

Russ Feingold (D) 256 vs. Wayne Gilchrest (R) 282

Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to make Russ win against a liberal Republican...

My favorite living Republican is Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield.  My favorite living Democrat is John Kerry.  Keep in mind that I realize Hatfield is 80 or so.  But I am not considering age in this.

Both are against the war.  Both are staunch environmentalists.  Hatfield is more of a free trader. Both favor government stepping in to help the poor and disadvantaged.  The big differences would be... Hatfield is opposed to abortion rights AND the death penalty.  Kerry is for abortion rights and supports the death penalty in certain circumstances. I am really stumped in the South.  They would generally like Hatfield's stand on abortion.  They would hate his stance on guns and the death penalty.  But could Kerry pick off a Southern state because of it?  Possibly.  Hatfield probably wouldn't swift boat the man and maybe Virginia would go for Kerry because of his military record.  But then, he is just so liberal on other things I dunno.  I'd be interested in what you guys think.

I put the map this way...

I am sure if I factored in Hatfield's age, Kerry would win more states.

Of course -- the GOP would never nominate someone as anti-war and pro-welfare as Hatfield,  at least not in the forseeable future.  But tht's the fun of a poll like this -- we can dream!

(Talk about an election that would be ripe for a third party to pick off a bunch of states!)

Hatfield is a little bit too liberal for me, but he was the best governor Oregon ever had(compared to the hack we have in office right now). In fact, I'll even stay away from Gordon Smith, who is much more my type(moderately pro-business), and think of someone fairly similar, though not the same. I thought of
Susan Collins/Jon Kyl vs Russ Feingold/Bill Richardson

I thought about California, but decided it was too much of a stretch.
