Will Greenland ever become an independent nation?

Not unless they're willing to forego the massive handouts they get from Denmark.

Very true. Also they only have 55,000 people, not very viable as an independent nation.

Only if they find something valuable there.

Funny, I attended a meeting about just that yesterday with a former Greenlandic minister. Her conclusion was that very few Greenlanders where striving towards total independence, but a more equal relationship where Greenland took more and more responsibilities upon itself, in a tempo defined by Greenland, was the most plausible relationship.

It's only about 4 billion DK kroner less that 800 mio US$ - and given the fact that Denmark has gotten away with not spending less that average in NATO because of the geo-strategic importance on Greenland - the difference might be to Greenland's advantage.

The fact that Greenland would be a microstate is much more important!

With global warming and rising energy costs, maybe they could - for a time - export you the ice cubes for your drinks. Tongue

Apparently Greenland will be having a referendum on 25 November about increasing the degree of home rule, though the specifics have yet to be worked out. (link)
