I know they make crappy products really cheaply in near slave like conditions and they love buying our debt, but did we have to give them the Olympics too?

Strangely enough, the US doesn't decide the location of the Olympics.

Strangely enough? I hope you're joking. The Olympics is an international event, not a US event.

So you were joking. That's good. It's hard to tell when people are being serious sometimes when there's only text to go by.

Oh I'm sorry. Just saw the libertarian label, didn't mean to get the wrong person.

I knew Clinton and Gore were on China's dick, I was unaware Bush was too.  I wonder if McCain and Obama are checking out lip gloss in Beijing yet.

In comparison with most countries of list (excepting Cuba and Belarus) China has rather good  human rights.

Well at least they don't use waterboarding anymore. Though I think they may have invented it.

Do we have a fear of China bashing on this message board?

I've got no objection to PRC bashing here.

The PRC may well have improved. Or everyone else in the new top 10 got worse.

It's not like Beijing is the first capital of a dodgy state to host the Olympics. Look at Moscow in 1980, or [name censored to avoid invoking Godwin's Law].

Mexico City in 1968 was also quite bad.

The decision is widely viewed as purely political.

Of course, the timing was unfortunate and unforeseeable.

The PRC is disgusting, they allow their own people to die of easily preventable accidents in our modern world, oppress Tibetans, poison Americans with dangerous products, the list is quite extensive.

The Olympics have become as irrelevant as the Nobel Peace Prize and UN "peacekeeping".

Except that the other two don't generate billions of dollars, unfortunately.

Very true.  I guess I should have said that the mission of human peace, unity and the dignity of mankind that the Olympics once claimed to represent has become laughably irrelevant.  Of course, one could say that has been the case since 1936 and its just gotten worse since.

And judging by all the Chinese-based mainstream websites, there has been zip, zero, nada, nyet, nein, none, at all, word of this event. Not even propaganda about reactionary agitators.

Very true. At this point, it's a commercial spectacle that gets placed in the United States every two decades because NBC says so.

Given that China helped finance the stimulus package I wouldn't be surprised. They're sort of like the US was after WWII, the world's leading creditor nation.
