Could a set of unfortunate circumstances have occurred to McCain somehow so that he technically leaves the GOP after facing off their official candidate, becoming an "Independent Republican" just as how Lieberman is an "Independent Democrat"?

That would be incredible. Perhaps he would start some abysmal third party and cut in half the angry, socially conservative, war mongering demographic.

Why would he leave the GOP if he won?

Why would he leave the GOP if he won?

I think the rationale is that he would only serve on term, and if he left the party, he wouldn't have to show loyalty he didn't like.

McCain is a Republican. Though he may disagree with them on certain issues, it seems he cares much more about currying favor with the party elite rather than flashing the maverick image he displayed in 2000. Though he may serve the "straight talk" on issues like Iraq, for example, he'd still want the party's support, otherwise he would be quite isolated without it.
