Yes, but I don't know whether or not to classify myself as a "Southerner". Miami isn't really "the South" as it is usually described.

To a point, yes, though Austin, while geographically in the South, isn't really "Southern," and even the conservatives here are mostly suburban conservatives who couldn't care less about a bunch of racist rednecks.

really there wasn't a good guys or bad guys in our program... IB is violently non-partisan and tries rather hard to "evaluate all perspectives"

No. Doing so would be against the education part of the history class.

Not particularly. I had an entire course on the Civil War and it generally tried to remain neutral. There did seem to be pro-union undertone, though, but I imagine up here that's just how it's.. understood.

Mine was fairly neutral.  My history teacher had a great admiration for Robert E. Lee but he didn't teach the class as pro-either side.  We focused mostly on what the reasons for the war were and then we were left to judge for ourselves who was right and who was wrong.

That sounds about right.

it saddens me to learn that the schools in north dakota dont give their children accurate history lessons.

maybe that is why north dakota is so behind the rest of the country.

We don't get there until May, but I think the history book (which I've read through) does a good job of not taking sides.

Mostly yes, though some of the reasoning of the south was also explained.

Not really; we just covered the issues, and had them presented in a non-biased manner.

LOL. North Dakota has one of the best ranked education systems in the country (like the rest of the Midwest). Far better than any southern state.

Yeah, I'd say so. My teacher was smiling when he was telling about Georgia being scorched.

I'm surprised the Europeans' classes even covered the US Civil War.

Yes, of course. Not that there were many lessons on it.

I'm surprised the Europeans' classes even covered the US Civil War.

Why?

Because it didn't have much of an effect on your countries. Not much of a major event in European history.

The only civil wars covered in my history classes besides ones the US was directly involved in (Vietnam) were the Spanish Civil War (as a brief precursor to WWII) and Chinese Civil War (for about two days.) Also I suspect the only reason the Chinese Civil War was covered was to explain the political situation of Taiwan.

Wrong actually (although that tends to be forgotten, even here). Where do you think all (or at least a lot) of all that cotton was exported to? And in any case, it all links up into slavery.

And that's no reason not to teach something anyway.

Not only that, but the American Civil War is the defining conflict in American history.  More so than either of the World Wars or even the American Revolution.  If you want to understand America, you need to understand the Civil War.

Not really. Teaching about Russia could be summarized as: Bolsheviks seize power, establish Soviet Union, Cold War begins. It also made it sound as if it was the Bolsheviks who overthrew the Czar by mentioning nothing in between.

Yes. We learned about how great Lincoln was. I think my teacher said she was a Republican. I wonder if she still is.
