president eisenhower declines to seek another term due to health reasons.

vice president nixon wins the gop nomination with little opposition.  he selects west virginia senator, and champion of civil rights, william chapman revercomb as his running mate.

on the democrat side, young minnesota senator hubert humphrey wins a nasty nomination fight against adlai stevenson, estes kefauver and albert gore.  going against the advice of his aides who think he needs someone older as his running mate, he chooses youthful massachusetts senator john kennedy as his running mate.

how does this race shape up?

discuss w/maps/\.

In this scenario, I fail to see how there isn't a third party for the South.  However, using what you gave me, this it it:

Humphrey wins the extremely close election, 271-260.

the south may vote for unpledged electors.

I don't think they would do that.  If anything, they would run a real candidate, like in 1948.
