The interesting part isn't so much that Northern Rock is to be nationalised (which, fwiw, I tend to think is the right thing to do for now, though I've not been following this closely) but that open nationalisation (as opposed to what was/is being done with the railway network) is to happen.

While there isn't a quote as yet, the worst reaction to the nationalsation of NR is the fact that shock horror, the Tories oppose nationalisation. I know it's been a while...

Who have 'ping-ponged' it back. I hope the Lords dig in their heels on this one. Any nationalisation bid should be audited and there should be no exemptions to the Freedom of Information act. Any government that wishes to opt-out Northern Rock from their own landmark FOI legislation either lack confidence in the legislation or have something to hide regarding how they wish to run and structure Northern Rock.
