Given how conservative the Republican Party of Virginia is (Warner was almost denied renomination in 1994 and Davis couldn't beat Gilmore) one would think that Huckabee might be doing better?

Yes, but, fundamentally, Huckabee isn't The Conservative Candidate; he's The Evangelical Candidate.

After Super Tuesday, most Republicans probably just see McCain as the best choice and the most likely to win in November(which is true, Huckabee's a little out there, and his other rivals didn't have the appeal to independents like he(mccain) does.

right, plus Virginia has lots of military and ex-military who don't care as much about social issues as they care about national security.
