New Poll: South Carolina President by Survey USA on 2008-01-23

Summary:
Obama:
45%
Clinton:
29%
Edwards:
22%
Other:
3%
Undecided:
1%

Poll Source URL: Full Poll Details

Two days till the South Carolina Democratic Primary, SurveyUSA finds Barack Obama at 45%, unchanged from a week ago; Hillary Clinton at 29%, down 7 from a week ago, and John Edwards at 22%, up 7 from a week ago.

Among white voters today, Clinton and Edwards are effectively tied, 37% Clinton (down 13 points from last week) to 34% Edwards (up 8 points from last week). Upstate, all 3 candidates are within 8 points of each other. In the Midlands, Obama is 2:1 atop Clinton. In the Low County, Obama and Clinton are down, Edwards is up, but Obama still leads by 15 points. More than a third of Democrats are focused on the Economy as the most important issue for the next president. Of those, Obama is backed by 48%, Clinton by 29%, Edwards by 20%. Among black voters, Obama leads 73% to 18%. Among voters under 50, Obama leads by 24. Among voters age 50+, Obama leads by 8. South Carolina is one of very few, and possibly the only Democratic primary state, where Obama leads among female voters. In most other states, Clinton has a stranglehold on women. Here in SC, Clinton led Obama by 33 points among females in November, but today, Obama is 12 atop Clinton among women.

Seems as if the clear pattern is movement of white voters from Clinton to Edwards after the debate. Someone (Morden?) called that the night of the debate.

(Bill) Clinton has successfully torpedoed Obama as the "black" (read: Jesse Jackson 1988) candidate.

It's good to see that Obama is fairly competetive among whites (at least according to this poll).

Agreed if he gets in the 20-30% range I think we might be able to avoid too-large of a white-black divide. If he gets in the 30-40% range... well that would be a blowout.

Hopefully Edwards will pull off an upset and get second, pushing Clinton into third. That would be a major blow to her campaign, she isn't expected to win but she is expected to at LEAST get second by a good enough margin.

It seems to me that Obama could do quite well in the Midwest, parts of the plains and the south (Also in the mountain states and possibly in parts of the west coast). However I can't see Obama break through in many places in the NE from Pennsylvania to Maine and California could be a major obsticle for him.

Edwards won here in 2004 and he was born here, he's practically from here.

Obama has been misrepresenting Clinton's position on NAFTA. She was pretty free trade in the 1990s true, but in this decade joined most Democrats (including John Edwards) in being disillusioned with free trade. Only Dennis Kucinich has actually promised to pull out of NAFTA, the others just say that it was a mistake and promise to review it. She has promised a freeze on all new trade deals and to review all existing trade deals. But Obama's ad just says she "supported NAFTA". It would be sad if that kind of misleading rhetoric determined the outcome.

Yes because the Clintons aren't using any misleading rhetoric against Obama obviously.

The way the media is perceiving this, if Edwards gets 2nd it would be a monumental upset against Clinton. Hey, it would fit in for this election, that's for sure.
