So if in 2004 it was the Blog Election then now it must be the YouTube Election.

I hope some of you morons realize that opposing a war in Somalia and supporting a war in Iraq is not "flip-flopping". This is a really dumb thread.

Not that I really agree with McCain on Iraq (and in the case of Somalia, his motivations are obviously political), but Somalia and Iraq are two completely different military engagements, each presenting different amount of troops, casualties, funds, scenarios, effects, justification, etc. Would it be hypocritical to support going to war in Afghanistan but oppose going to war in Iraq? I don't think it would.

For the record, George H.W. Bush got us embroiled in Somalia.  It was a little present he left for Bill Clinton.

Then you need to find a record of McCain's position during Bush Sr. in order to determine consistency.

Well, according to this 2001 Al Qaeda map, McCain only opposes wars in countries that actually had  Al Qaeda at that point in time. (The US and Somalia have Al Qaeda, while Iraq doesn't).

This is a nutty thread on the surface but on the whole speaks to the character of McCain. McCain was talking about Somalia not IRAQ.  US should only engage in war where we have a strategic interest.  That was not Somalia but it is IRAQ.   Somebody made the point that George H. Bush started Somalia.  PERFECT.  That meant nothing to McCain.  He is not a party hack; he is an independent minded thinker.

Mac is back....Go Mac go

Angry Weasel actually makes a good point!

His reasoning sounds just like an anti-war person today arguing. Just replace "Somalia" with "Iraq"

McCain sounding like an anti-war candidate.  I'm sure we can find a clip of Jimmy Carter sounding like General Patton also.

McCain...anti-war when strategic interests of US are at stake?  That dog will never, ever hunt

Well, Iraq is no greater a strategic asset than Somalia. Oil? I guess so....then again, that supply mostly goes to Europe and we were STILL getting MORE oil under Saddam.  Iran? Didn't we invade Afghanistan? Israel? What could have Iraq done?

How much oil does Somalia have?

What objective did we have with the intervention in Somalia?

How much oil does Somalia have?I was talking about Iraqi Oil and how that's a non-sequitor argument

What objective did we have with the intervention in Somalia?
What do we have now? We did have the removal of Saddam. We now have some goals, but we still have no way of ever saying "we won the war".
