In 1976, President Gerald Ford loses the nomination to Kansas Senator Bob Dole. Dole, with solid conservative credentials, and confident he can hold the Republican base intact, asks Vice President Nelson Rockefeller to continue serving the nation as Vice President, and to be his running mate. Rockefeller, realizing he will never become the Presidential nominee, accepts, as he wishes to continue his career in public life, and to continue serving the nation.
On the Democratic side, liberal Democratic Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota wins the Democratic nomination in a hard fought nomination fight with former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia and Congressman Mo Udall of Arizona. Mondale is uncompromising in his liberal principles and beliefs in his choice for Vice President, picking fellow liberal Democratic Senator Alan Cranston of California.
