Huckabee got the most votes by region....I think im reading that right. Piedmont, Midlands, Pee Dee Region his....and the Low Country for McCain [which im sure consists of Charleston and other bigger areas].

That could mean the CD's could be largely split between McCain & Huckabee...so Huck may still win a lot of delegates.

Mitt Romney stopped campaigning and withdrew his ads in South Carolina and Fred Thompson, who has been campaigning hard, is vying for third place with Romney.

Thompson has to drop out, and soon, and put an end to his misery.

anyone watching the MSNBC coverage?  (yeah, I turned the channel)  McCain's mouthpiece is saying, "I reckon that when John McCain wins South Carolina, he'll get the momentum and he'll have the entire Republican establishment behind him after tonight."

Am I the only Registered Republican on this forum who'd consider voting for a Democrat, Libertarian, or other candidate in the event John McCain wins?  Somehow I doubt that John McCain will have the "entire Republican establishment behind him.".  Yeah, he'll have lots Republicans behind him after tonight.  Probably those 67 percent of South Carolinians who voted for someone other than John McCain will be behind him.  They will be behind him because they'll be running him out of town.

Thinking about it, a Huckabee victory might not actually be the best result for those who want to stop McCain. Huckabee winning means his supporters will stick with him, but Huckabee losing means at least some will defect to Romney, who has a much better chance at derailing McCain in states such as Illinois and California than Huckabee does.

So, how long will it take before we're likely to know the results?

Here's hoping McCain pulls it out.  I think he could win without this state, but it would be icing on the cake if he was able to claim it.

I would say the final result will be obvious by 8 (EST), possibly before then.

Huckabee supporters defecting to Romney.  I really doubt it, but ok.

According to the exit poll, Huckabee picked up quite a few conservative Protestants, non-evangelicals, who might otherwise prefer Romney (certainly to McCain) or Thompson (but he's dropping out).

If they're upper-income voters, then Romney can pick them up.  He seems to have no luck with the lower-income voters, and that's where the Huckabee base is.

Those are pretty rare though. He also carries some Catholics too(10%), who might prefer Romney too. I really doubt it will make much of an impact though.

Huckabee losing early in Lexington County - 32-27.   I think Michael Barone said Huckabee needed this county and this would be an early indicator for this race.
