In 2000

Former Tennessee Governor, and former Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander, wins the Republican Presidential nomination in an upset victory over Texas Governor George W Bush and Arizona Senator John McCain.  In a surprise move, Alexander picks former Red Cross Society President, former Labor Secretary, and former Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina for Vice President.

An all southern ticket won for the Democrats in 1992 and 1996, so the idea of an all southern ticket is no longer thought of as off the wall.

In a stunning upset victory on the Democratic side, liberal stalwart Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota defeats chief rivals Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee and former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley to win the Democratic Presidential nomination.  Wellstone surprises the party by naming New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen as his Vice Presidential running mate.

Lamar Alexander/Elizabeth Dole (R): 371 Electoral Votes, 55% of the PV
Paul Wellstone/Jeanne Shaheen (D): 167 Electoral Votes, 45% of the PV

Former Governor Alexander wins comfortably over Senator Wellstone. It's as simple as that. If the Republicans nominated anybody (with exceptions with Alan Keyes etc) they would have demolished Senator Wellstone in the General Election. Now, that map I have posted maybe too generous to Senator Wellstone.

Why do think I had Wellstone get crushed in my TL?

Because he is not electable - pure and simple.
