In this race, I think Helms actually hurts Carter more than Ford, since Carter was arguably the more conservative of the two candidates.

Ford/Dole: 43% PV, 297 EV
Carter/Mondale: 40% PV, 204 EV
Helms/Buckley: 17% PV, 37 EV

It's actually been done before, if you look at some of my McCain '08 maps, you'll find a GOP victory.

Helms doesn't win a state.  not terribly close in any of them, either.  the evangelical movement was solidly behind Carter in 1976.

I don't think Helms runs on a purely Evangelical movement, he runs as an overall conservative, which Ford certainly was not.  Basically, he runs on the same issues Reagan did that year, except in the GE and not just the primaries.
