On the republican side, John McCain is nominated on the first ballot and he selects former competitor Fred Thompson as his running mate.

On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton is nominated on the second ballot after a hard fight for the nomination between herself, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. The convention was in deadlock on the first ballot, and on the second ballot, the votes changed just enough for a narrow victory for Clinton on the second ballot. The democratic party is very split after the closest convention vote for either party since the GOP convention in 1976.

Chris Dodd runs as an independent and he convinces Mike Gravel of Alaska to be his running mate.

How does this election turn out? Discuss with maps.

Why would Dodd do that?  Besides, I doubt it would take much "convincing."

I am not the only hack on here. In fact I am probably responding to the most hackish person in the history of any website forum that I have ever been on.

You ignored Mitty's questions Mr. Porter. They are the following:

1.  why would dodd run as an indy?
2.  and why would he pick gravel as a running mate?

What? This is a really strange what-if. If we were on an AltHist forum, I would call it ASBish.

Dodd could be unhappy with the party ticket and run against it.

As running as an independent, which is unlikely but something that I included in this scenario, is that Dodd would want a running mate with experience as an independent, and that is Gravel.

And on unplausible threads, you and others can read and comment on my post in Taft vs. Truman post in the past election what-ifs section. That will explain alot and explain in detail that I am not the only unplausible poster on here. Thank you.

That's the funniest thing I have heard all day. Dodd selecting Gravel for experience. You should become one of those tabloid news journalists Gporter. You try to produce good segues and that would be enough for you to work on Channel 7's Today Tonight.

I reject your premise.

Without the insane third party ticket, Clinton barely wins.  Despite Bayh, she does not carry Indiana.

Why would Dodd, a man who has served in Congress for 30 years, pick someone who served in Congress for 12 years 30 years ago for experience?  I smell a hack.

I doubt it, since I'm smelling an Iris, not an American Dogwood Tongue
