He was an SDP mp first. Isnt he still a councillor as well?

Briefly; he won the seat in a by-election in 1984, lost it narrowly in 1987, barely missed winning it in 1992, then won it back in 1997 and has held it since. He also ran in 1983 but lost by a wide margin.

Neighboring Havant and Gosport are still pretty damn working class for safe(-ish on 97/01 vote totals) Tory seats IIRC.

Not really; demographically it's fairly average. Might have been more working class in the past o/c; I think I still have access to census results by constituency for 1981 so I might check that.

Neighboring Havant and Gosport are still pretty damn working class for safe(-ish on 97/01 vote totals) Tory seats IIRC.

In the case of Havant it's a little deceptive; most of it is middle class, but it also includes a large council estate (it's also a retirement centre). Gosport is mostly working class though. Whole area around Portsmouth votes well to the right of what could "normally" be expected (for obvious reasons).

Navy personnel? I imagine that's what you mean but I thought I'd check i was something obvious that I didn't know..
