Served as Minister at the MAFF(ia) from 1989 to 1993 and then Secretary for the Environment from 1993 to 97. Interestingly, he has contested every general election since 1964 despite only having continuous service since 1979 (he also held Lewisham West from 1970-4)

Most famous for feeding his 4 year old daughter a beef burger at the height of the BSE crisis to prove his confidence in British beef. He was upstaged ten years later when John Prescott fed his daughter a train to prove that the British railways really were safe.

Arguably his greatest successes are yet to be truly celebrated - he started the green revolution in government - he gave us the landfill tax and instituted various conservation measures.

It was the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
It has since been superceded by DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Surely you mean the Department for the Elimination of Farming and Rural Affairs?
