''Severe flood warnings are in place on parts of the east coast of England, with the Environment Agency warning of "extreme danger to life and property".

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was chairing an emergency Cobra meeting, as low pressure and strong winds combined to cause a North Sea tidal surge.

Norfolk and Suffolk have seven severe flood warnings. Parts of Kent, Essex, North Yorks and Lincs are on alert.

The Dartford Creek and Thames barriers were set to be closed at 2000 GMT.

The flood alerts are a response to weather and tide patterns being tracked this week by the Environment Agency and the Met Office. ''

Fingers crossed; hopefully no-one get's seriously hurt or killed.

Btw, le Beeb hath a little explanation note of the term "severe" in this context. It means:

Run for the hills basically. Not that there are many hills in East Anglia. Run for the Less Flat Bits then.

Or tape a couple of cows to a shrub and wait it out Smiley We're concerned about any surge affecting the Belgian coast due to our flat there. But even if the worst happened it's not our home; it's not everything and should something happen, then it's not anything.

Surge expected to peak between 0430 and 0700. The surge is expected to be up to 3m, coinciding with peak high tides.

Any chance you guys could bottle that water up and send it to the American South?  Might help with the cost of recovery

No. Because it'll be sea water.

Is Brighton/East Sussex under any risk at all? Obviously it should be OK here because Brighton is a hilly place but I live at the bottom of a hill and my bedroom is on the ground floor!

I've gotten rather cynical about the environment agency predicting a "surge" after all the false dawns I had in Oxford earlier in the year.

It's their own fault.  If morons wouldn't disobey laws and water their grass, we wouldn't have as severe of a problem (but there'd still be a problem).

LONDON (Reuters) - Conservative Party leader David Cameron has told how supermodel Kate Moss asked for his phone number after mistaking him for a plumber.

Cameron said he was introduced to Moss at a charity dinner after floods hit Britain this year.

The opposition leader said he could not think of anything to say and so lamented the downpours that had affected his central England constituency where she has a home.

"So I went on like this, twittering on, and she turned around and said: 'God, you sound like a really useful guy, can I have your phone number?'

"I went back to my table and said 'The good news is, I met Kate Moss and she wanted my telephone number'," Cameron told chat show host Michael Parkinson on ITV television on Friday.

"The bad news is I think she thinks I'm something to do with drainage."
