Background:
Born into a working-class conservative Greek immigrant family in 1938, he moved around quite a bit during his young years, and attended the University of Richmond, where he attained a PhD in Antillian history. He became a lawyer and for a brief period served in the Antillian Armed Forces.
Today he is a conservative Christian as well as an economic socialist. For this reason he is popular among rural-dwellers, Francophones, Blacks, and Indians.
