Don't know much about him; he's notable for taking over in 2001 from John Morris, who was the longest continually-serving Labour MP in the Commons, first elected in 1959 (Tony Benn was elected in 1950 but had interruptions due to his peerage in 1963, and his defeat in 1983).

He's an academic and has written some good stuff on the involvement of Welsh miners in the Spanish Civil War.
