Let's say in 1984, rejuvenated Governor of Alabama George Wallace decides to run for the Democratic nomination and surprisingly wins in a crowded field. Defeating former Vice President Walter Mondale, Senator Gary Hart and Senator John Glenn, not to mention many others.

For Vice President, Governor Wallace decides to pick the young charasmatic Senator from Colorado Gary W. Hart.

Like in real life, President Ronald Reagan is nominated for a second term as President, likewise with Vice President George H. W. Bush.

How would this matchup turn out? Would Wallace be able to take the Deep South for the Democrats? Discuss with maps.

And yes I know Ronnie Reagan would be re-elected, I'd be interested to see how people would think this election would turn out.

The South's favorite son improves on Mondale but this is still a landslide for Reagan.

How rejuvenated would Wallace have been? If it was anything less than a full Dr. Strangelove, he would have been dogged by health concerns. He would have had too much baggage to explain away in any case, and would have had no chance.

Wallace became a populist in his last race for governor in 1982. I highly doubt he would win any southern states plus his past politics would make him look like a modern day flip-flopper.

Judging on your comments it would still probably be like the RL 1984 Presidential Election. Where the Republican ticket of Reagan/Bush would win with around 500+ Electoral College votes to the Dem's somewhere in the teens. However, I believe that Wallace despite being a born again Governor, Wallace would poll well in some deep south states, but not that many. I could also see Wallace taking a state or two in the Midwest (probably Michigan).

Ronald Reagan/George H.W. Bush (R): 453 EV, 57%
George C. Wallace/Gary Hart (D): 85 EV, 41%
Others (Libertarian ect.): 0 EV, 2%

No contest really.

Reagan and Bush sweep the nation.

Wallace is able to hold onto four deep south states.

Playboy Hart adds nothing to the Wallace ticket.

Reagan becomes the first Republican in history to win DC.

Reagan/Bush                   500
Wallace/Hart                     38
