 Bayh endorses Clinton for president

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 1 minute ago

Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, who once aspired to the Democratic presidential nomination, on Monday endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the White House.

"I believe she will run a campaign that is both tough and smart when it comes to protecting our nation's security," Bayh said at a news conference with Clinton.

Bayh, a former governor of a Republican-leaning state, is in his second term in the Senate. He won re-election with 62 percent of the vote in 2004 and is considered a possible Democratic vice presidential choice in 2008.

A colleague of Clinton's on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Bayh pursued a possible presidential bid until late last year when he dropped out of the race amid evidence that Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois were building formidable campaign organizations.

Clinton said she agreed with Bayh, a centrist, that "Democrats should campaign everywhere in America." He was named a national co-chair of her campaign.

Clinton and Bayh traveled together to Iraq in January, just before Clinton announced she would seek the Democratic nomination. Bayh is one of several potential presidential contenders who have abandoned their own bids to endorse her.

Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack dropped his bid last winter to become the New York senator's campaign chairman. Last week, retired Gen. Wesley Clark also announced he was backing Clinton.

"Hillary Clinton is a seasoned, experienced leader who will be ready to lead this country on Day One," Bayh said.

Earlier this year, Obama suggested that only former President Clinton would be ready from Day One, slighting Sen. Clinton.

I'm not surprised. If Hillary does win the nomination next year, I half-expect Bayh to be the VP nominee.

At one stage I was actually supporting Evan Bayh for President, until he decided against running for the Presidency in December 2006. Boy was that a longtime ago. He could have done well in the Democratic Primaries, better than Joe Biden and Chris Dodd anyway.

It seems that the Clinton/Bayh ticket is becoming more of a possiblity every single minute.

looking at that list, it seems Hillary, McCain, Romney and Guiliani are the only ones with senators outside their home state endorsing them...and Rudy only has one.

They're beginning to coalesce.  I guess it's a predictable choice for him, given that of the three front-runners her general ideology the closest to him politically.

Wonder who Dick Cheney will endorse?

It's the smartest choice really, for him.  Obama and Edwards don't have a good shot at winning and Clinton does, so obviously, if your goal is to one day be president, you should back the candidate most likely to become president in this election as well as the one most likely to pick you for VP.  That's Hillary.

She's actually not the devil most people think she is.  She's just as smart--if not smarter--as her husband and would probably be as successful as him too.  She's not my pick, but she's not my least favorite by any means--and I wouldn't be totally upset if she won, I think she could be really good.

And just for the record, I'm an independent/lean Republican.

Clinton/Bayh. That is certainly a ticket that will excite the hell out of the left wing base! I know I'm excited!

But where's the proof that the left-wing base actually wins elections? Chances are the ticket that appeals most to the left base (which I don't think is an entirely accurate description of the base) will end up isolating those voters in swing states who decide these things.

The question is, will a Hillary/Obama ticket excite them?

Or will the liberals claim that Obama has lost all dignity for joining the warmonger and should be primaried out of office?

That ticket will never exist so I guess we'll never know.

Oh, but you forget! Not only does Clinton have the highest favorability among Democrats, but according to them, she's also the most left-wing and most anti-war.

Ugh, we shouldn't nominate someone that people think is a lot more liberal than they are.
