Basically the opposite of libertarian.  This means they are socially conservative and economically liberal.

That's how the term is often used due to lack of another term to describe that alignment, but it actually just means economically liberal. Paul Wellstone was often described as populist.

True, 'populist' is not the best descriptive word. I prefer the European and Latin American 'Christian Democrat' label, as it is more consistent.
