and I would like to know how previous presidents might have reacted in particular:

President Kennedy
President FD Roosevelt
President Truman

No idea, but I'd reckon they wouldn't hang around to finish a book say called My Pet Goat or something similiar. Not that I'm referring to any particular president or anything.

All of them would have launched an attack on the real enemy, in the right place, without delay; none of them would have started an unnecessary war in a country that had nothing to do with the attack; none of them would have used the attack as an excuse to unnecessarily curtail civil liberties (except maybe FDR-- he might have put all the Arab-Americans in internment camps).

All three would have reacted right away:

FDR would have called his good friend Joe Stalin for help.

Truman would have sent the enola gay on yet another mushroom cloud mission.

Kennedy would have signed the attack order for utter destruction in the middle of the night and then delivered a stunning speech right after giving Marilyn Monroe his one gun salute in the oval office.

And I doubt that any of them would have had their primary readers on hand.
