Shades of 1976 with Reagan.

You know there are people in the Fleet Center saying, "Obama's the guy who should be speaking on Thursday night.  Kerry doesn't have a thimbleful of what he's got."

Damn. He's good. The Dems have a keeper.

Unfortunately he hasn't even won senate yet, so he's not a political powerhouse yet.  I'll vote for him when he runs as vice president (more likely) or president sometime in the future.

The "child can't read in the South Side of Chicago" lines aren't part of his stump. looked at Obama's website earlier and found a video with the same speech.  I'm still a fan though.

To think that Obama has only been a state Senator for 7 years and a failed Congressional candidate back in 2000, now he is seen as the future of the Democratic party. He really knows how the capture the heart and soul of his part. I'm already seeing "Obama for President 2012" statements! He will become one of the Senate Dems I disagree with the most but I admire him for being one smart politician.

Didn't Bill Clinton lose his first congressional race back in the seventies?  Plus he lost re-election for Governor in 1980.

That was the best speech I have heard since the prime years of Ronald Reagan. Seriously, this guy is inspirational.

If he GOVERNS as reasonably and moderately as he talks, this man will be the nation's first Black President.

I confess to knowing little about his political leanings, but if he goes to the Senate, strikes a moderate tone as a foreign policy HAWK, he will be President some day. He is a very, very, very good speaker.

I tend to think Harold Ford has a better shot at becoming the first black president, as he is a moderate.  I doubt Obama's voting record in the senate will prove to be moderate at all.

Point is: Obama is just a State Senator. Never has State Senator made so much of an impact in national politics before he is elected to higher office.

Well he will be elected Senator in November, there really isn't much question about that.

I would have agreed with you on Harold Ford until about 10 days ago, but I heard him on the Bill O'Reilly show, and he has turned WAYYYYYYYYYY to the left of where he was just two years ago. If Obama is well to the left in practice, then he's not the threat I perceive him to be. BUT....the rhetoric he used tonight was not left or right....it was AMERICAN, and that's something I have not heard from the Democratic Party in a LONG, LONG time.

He had some speech on C-SPAN a few days ago, I don't detect a leftward swing.  His voting record, however, is what counts, and he is VERY moderate.  He only got a 'C' from the NAACP.

Also, I thought Obama's rhetoric was left-wing tonight.

AMAZING speech.

Expressed Democratic ideas in Republican language.

A joy to watch.

I might do a Kemp/Obama write in vote this year Smiley

Tweed,

If VOTING RECORD is what really counts (and I'm not sure it does in the modern era of politics) then you better get ready for the second term of G.W. Bush!!! If people voted according to Kerry's voting record, you guys would have ZERO chance, but voting record is apparently just one relatively minor factor in today's media driven world.

As for Obama's rhetoric, it was NOT left wing, it was NOT right wing, it was moderate and it spoke of the United States in POSITIVE language that I have not heard your party use in a long, long time.

In simple terms, Obama sounded like a guy who feels the cup is "half full" and not "half empty", and that's in stark contrast to John Kerry, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean or any of your other recent party heavyweights.

Well I don't think Bush is done exposing that just yet.

I disagree, some of the things he said about black-white relation remind me of Charles Rangel (and the like).

Absolutely right!  It was the best speech of the convention so far.  While I will be voting for Kerry in November, I'm not as wild about most of the performances as some of the Dem's reviews.  I thought Carter, H. Clinton, Kennedy, and Sebelius were weak.  Most other's were o.k.  Obama was simply spectacular.  I do think his voting record will be well left of what he showed us here tonight.  Nonetheless, he will still probably not be heinously left-wing... so he'll likely have some votes (assuming he wins the Senate seat) to back up his moderate claims.  As such... barring some scandal, this guy's got a huge future in the party.

Absolutely fantastic speech.  Very positive and upbeat.  I turned off the coverage since nothign can top that.  I envy Edwards and Kerry having to follow that up.

BTW, anyone else thinks he looks and sounds a little like the Rock?  I was hoping he would threaten to take THe Presidential Seal, shine it up real nice, turn that smofabitch side ways and shov it eup George W. Bush's posterior.

Uh, this guy is no moderate.  He's a far left socialist who could win the White House the only way a socialist could win it - by disquising himself and he can do it.  However, in 10 years, no Republican will be able to be elected dogcatcher in this country anyway due to changing demographics.

In fact, we may be there now.

Kemp is my guy.  I like his beliefs a lot.

Too bad that wing of the GOP is nearly dead.

Big tent.  Given a choice between welfare and a shot at the American dream, most will take a shot at the dream.

The GOP used to understand that.
