Suppose in 1960, Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson surprisingly wins the 1960 Democratic Nomination on the 2nd ballot. For Vice President, Senator Johnson selects fellow Senator and former Secretary of the Airforce Stuart Symington.

Whilst on the Republicans side, Vice President Richard Nixon cruises to the Republican nomination without any major challengers. For Vice President, Vice President Nixon selects Senator Thurston B. Morton of Kentucky.

Johnson/Symington would have been a strong ticket... kind of reminds me of Clinton/Gore in that it's composed of two experienced, well-known southern moderates. Liberals may not have cared for it too much, but I doubt that many of them would have defected to Nixon.
